The Sustainable Surfer’s Guide to Secondhand Gear
For many surfers, the thrill of unwrapping a brand-new board is part of the ritual. But what if the most radical drop, in you could make was on a used board?
Buying used surf equipment isn’t just a budget-friendly option; it’s a statement in favor of sustainability. The production of new surfboards, wetsuits, and other gear has a significant environmental footprint. From the use of petroleum-based foams and resins in boards to the neoprene in wetsuits, the manufacturing process consumes resources and generates waste.
Every time you choose a pre-loved board, you are diverting it from a landfill and giving it a new life. A perfectly good board, with a few dings and some pressure dents, still has plenty of waves to ride. Instead of contributing to the demand for new production, you’re embracing a circular economy where products are reused and repurposed.
Further, sustainability isn’t the only benefit. Used gear often comes with a story. It’s a testament to the waves a board has seen and the adventures it has been on.
So, where do you find these treasures? Online marketplaces, local surf shops with consignment programs, and dedicated surf-gear swap meets are excellent places to start. Local Facebook groups are also available. Look for boards with a little bit of character—dings are normal and easily repaired. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the board’s history. A well-maintained used board can perform just as well as a new one.
