Surfing at the Eisbach E2 Wave: Access Restricted, But Not Impossible
The E2 wave in the English Garden in Munich has long been a popular spot for surfers. However, since early February 2025, the situation has changed dramatically: A new fence now blocks the usual access to the wave.
What Happened?
The affected areas belong to private properties, and the owners have relocated the fence. As a result, surfers can no longer jump directly into the water from the wall – a method many have used in the past.
Why Was the Fence Moved?
The property owners cite several reasons for this measure:
- Noise pollution from surfers and spectators, especially at night
- Littering of the area
- Safety and liability concerns
- Damage to the property caused by heavy visitor traffic
Reactions from the Surfing Community
This decision has caused frustration and confusion among surfers. The E2 wave was previously an accessible alternative to the famous Eisbach wave further upstream and was particularly appreciated by locals and beginners. Now, discussions are underway on whether and how a solution can be found. Many hope for a dialogue with the property owners or potential intervention from the city.
Is Surfing Still Possible?
Yes, but under more difficult conditions. Surfers now have to either enter the wave by letting them drift in from further upstream or take more complicated climbing approaches by carefully climbing along the new fence to reach the end part where one can barely stand on the stone. Some surfers put their board onto the water, stepping on it with one foot and pulling themselves with one foot on the board and one foot on the wall along the two new fence segments.
The new fence may not only affect safety but could also lead to a decline in surfing activity at the E2 wave as the start has been made much harder.
What’s Next?
Whether there will be an official agreement or an adjustment to the access rules remains to be seen. However, one thing is certain: The Munich surfing community will not give up without a fight.
